Sound EG 3; Bride of Chucky, Yu, 1998

Ronny Yu, 1998
Production:

 Budget: $25m; UK box office:£500k

Polysemic - No anchorage and no definite answer
Denotation - what we hear first what it may suggest

Denotation:

String instruments- slow drawn out notes  - polysemic - mysterious effect - tension - mystery, horror, thriller.
Timpani - slow beats in the beginning and opening - polysemic - signifies heartbeat or footsteps.

Commutation Test - If you switch the string to a kazzu the genre would switch to comedy and vise versa.

When long notes are played from stringed instruments our heart beat slows down and uncociously hold our breath

When short notes are played from percussion instruments such as drums they create short loud sounds therefore our heart rate speeds up and we breathe faster.

Our bodies are being manipulated from the start.

Visual Effects:

Crash of thunder - lightning - Diegetic
Rain - Diegetic
Opening of gate or door - Diegetic
footsteps getting louder and louder - Diegetic
Music - Non Diegetic
Phone - exaggerated diegetic sound
Unlocking of boot shutting it and driving off - Diegetic
Dripping water - Diegetic
Windscreen wipes - Diegetic
Banging/tapping onto the window - Diegetic
Dumb blonde on phone - Diegetic

Music fades in and out of opening throughout

Loud sound is followed by fast paced music

There is no dialogue until the actor enters the car.
